Darla Records is proud to offer a new solo record by our old friend Matt Hunter of the legendary Western Mass. indie rock outfits New Radiant Storm King and Silver Jews.
New Rotations is the first solo record from Matt Hunter. As half the songwriting team of New Radiant Storm King, Matt's songs have always stood out as more introspective, pastoral, jangley (listen to "View of a Wedding through the Hubble Telescope") and often have that certain New Zealand indie pop/rock feel. Acoustic piano and guitar, plus fiddle and pedal steel guitar play an integral part to balance and round out electric guitars, bass & drums on New Rotations. Matt knows how to tell a story simultaneously lyrical and poignant, which always distills bits of everyday life into something more sublime, personal and profound. That's always an treat. Matt has an endearing gift in his ability to communicate under the noise of life.
Recommended if you like The Verlaines, Richard Lloyd, Chris Bell, Mission of Burma, Velvet Underground.
One thing Matt didn't communicate is that he has an amazingly talented wife and that she also plays in his band now. D.W. Hunter aka D.W. BOX's debut record Make Way for the Time Change is to be simultaneously released with New Rotations on Darla this Summer.
This is the part of the story where the unseen hand of the universe plays strongly. The plan to release New Rotations was set at the beginning of 2017. A year previous, I was turned on to D.W. BOX by musical friend. Absolutely the best work I've heard in some time. Female fronted electro-pop with more than one obvious single on the record, however, I concluded she was already well on her way via support of her music friends in both Louisville and Brooklyn scenes and I did not pursue it. In January, Matt posted a video of her song "Tall Blonde Girls" on Facebook. I realized a year had since past, did an online search, determined there was no new album and immediately messenger-ed D.W. BOX via Facebook. I told her I wanted to put out an album on Darla. It turned out that a year previous the friend who turned me on to her work had told her the same, she had expected to hear from me and was super bummed that I hadn't called, thinking I wasn't that interested. We had a good long talk and planned to release a record. Then she told me was her birthday.
Here's where it gets weird. She told me, "I saw the contract you sent to Matt. Looks good to me. There's a lot of reasons why it would make sense for Matt and me to be on the same label." I then saw in email her last name was Hunter. "You have the same last name as Matt? Not related though?", I asked. Maybe I'm a little slow to catch on. "Matt Hunter and I are married.", she replied.
I'm glad to have known Matt since 1992. Darla has worked with his band New Radiant Storm King since 2006. Matt & D.W. met in 2010 and married in 2012. Who knew? I sure am glad I found out and I wish them all the best.

A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
